Labour fight for three week deposit cap

Everyone through it was safe to breathe a sign of relief with deposits capped at six weeks, but apparently there's potential for further waves if the political landscape changes…

It was announced in a tweet by Melanie Onn, the shadow housing minister that Labour is fighting for a maximum deposit of just three weeks’ rent.
She stated that ‘The current deal for private renters is unacceptable – Labour in government would do more to protect them.’

The current proposals under the Tenants Fees Bill state that the maximum deposit that could be charged would be capped at six weeks’ rent. This is due to be put in place in Summer 2019. The Bill is currently in committee stage, receiving evidence. This can be received until 5pm on Tuesday June 12. If you wish to submit you can do so by emailing scrutiny@parliament.uk
