A new study by Direct Line Home Insurance has found that the long-standing joke that you never meet a poor plumber might have some truth to it…
If your property springs a leak, your first instinct would probably be to reach for the phone and call for a friendly local tradesman - after all, escaping water can cause huge amounts of damage in a home so fast action is vital. However, this phone call could end up costing you hundreds of pounds.
The research shows that on average, plumbers ramp up their fees by a huge 117% if you call them out to deal with an emergency, with some admitting to ramping costs by an unbelievable 500%!
Some of the plumbers surveyed (taken from a sample of over 100 across the UK) admitted to quoting up to £300 an hour + VAT on an emergency call out, with 42% changing a minimum call out for an emergency.
This represents the cost for labour alone, is you need any parts or materials to tackle your problem you can expect your bill to be even higher!
