Campaign for housing benefit tenants and dream property

Campaign to ensure tenants who receive housing benefits get a fair chance at their dream property

Activists have launched a campaign to stop the discrimination of private tenants on housing benefits by landlords in London.

The Hackney Digs group is calling on Letting agents to scrap what they believe is a ‘blanket ban’, and has plans to name and shame the worst offenders.

‘Yes DSS’ campaign activist approached 50 London-based letting agents in the Hackney borough, claiming to be benefits recipients looking for a property, and say half admitted to having a ‘No DSS’ policy and turned them away.
Campaigners are concerned that this method could potentially affect people including professionals who work full time, disabled people, carers, those fleeing abusive relationships, single parents or those on low incomes.

Urban.co.uk accept enquiries from all prospective tenants – both in London and across the UK - unless the landlord of the property has specified otherwise. Whether a landlord is prepared to accept tenants who receive housing benefit is their choice, and it is not the estate agent's decision whether to accept enquiries from prospective tenants or not.
